Mid-August Lunch (2008)

Gianni is a middle-aged man living in Rome with his imposing and demanding elderly mother. His only outlet from her and the increasing debt into which they are sinking, are the increasingly frequent quiet sessions at the local tavern. As an Oriental saying goes, 'Moments of crisis are moments of opportunities'. These appear during the celebration of the holiday of Ferragosto on 15 August. That's when everybody leaves town to have fun. Opportunity knocks on Gianni's door in the most unexpected way.

This short but sweet film was actually extremely engaging. It also seemed to be a great snapshot of Italian culture. My husband and I are very interested in the culture and have heard how laid back and familial it is. You can definitely feel such characteristics in this film. I loved following Gianni around town and around his home. It's a simple story but it's done so well. It's a film that would be perfect on a busy day, allowing the viewer to slow down and enjoy the small things in every day life. A great film!

If you go into this with a Hollywood mindset you'll be disappointed. It is not so much a comedy as it is a radiant postcard to the possibilities of age and the power of community. There isn't much of a plot but it becomes more of what the Times' Stephen Holden called, "a slender Chekhovian vignette."
