Miami Blues (1990)

After Junior is released from prison, he plans on starting a new life in Miami. But when he kills a man in the airport, he flees the scene and finds Susie, a mild-mannered prostitute searching for stability. The two opposites become romantically involved, and Junior steals a badge and gun from a veteran detective. Using the officer's identity, Junior embarks on a crime spree and convinces Susie that he is the perfect man.

Miami Blues is about a killer (Alec Baldwin) that hooks up with an ignorant young prositute and goes in a crime spree robbing and killing people with another cops gun. It isn't like Natural Born Killers so to say... It's kind of a comedy, but it never really goes anywhere. I think Jennifer Jason Leigh is a really good actress and Fred Ward provides abit of humor, but the whole film feels pointless and it never really gets better or extremely interesting.

Certainly the going is grim, and there's nothing socially redeeming about "Blues" whatsoever, but writer/director George Armitage's movie is also funny, stirring and full of great moments done in the pop-arty, lightly macabre spirit of producer Jonathan Demme.

Tarantinoesque crime film (before Tarantino) with young and trim Alec Baldwin playing a sociopath who finds love and is hunted by a hapless detective with false teeth.

Colossally underrated movie. Miami Blues manages to bring new life into the "offbeat" sub-genre; never substituting style for substance and always focusing on its increasingly intriguing characters. The cast is perfect (especially Baldwin is a stand-out), and perfectly held in check by Armitage's laid-back, controlled direction (as was the case with Grosse Pointe Blank). One of those movies everyone should've seen already.

Funny but with a major violent dramatic sense, Miami Blues shines with its superb plot and terrific performances by Alec Baldwin, Fred Ward and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
