Miami Blues (1990)

After Junior is released from prison, he plans on starting a new life in Miami. But when he kills a man in the airport, he flees the scene and finds Susie, a mild-mannered prostitute searching for stability. The two opposites become romantically involved, and Junior steals a badge and gun from a veteran detective. Using the officer's identity, Junior embarks on a crime spree and convinces Susie that he is the perfect man.

The horribly average production seems especially wasted as Alec Baldwin turns in a performance far greater than the movie asks for or deserves. The movie lacks a single memorable scene, character of piece of dialogue to raise it beyond the TV-movie level and is just as forgettable. If it wasn't for Baldwin there would be nothing to recommend and its tribute to his commitment that the movie is recommendable at all.

It's hard to believe now that Alec "Puffy" Baldwin was once a smoldering leading man in search of his breakout role. A couple of years after hitting the supporting-actor trifecta with MARRIED TO THE MOB, WORKING GIRL AND BEETLEJUICE (and shortly after his first star turn, in THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER), Baldwin took a chance with this startling indie feature, a sunburned black comic tale of an ex-con who briskly picks up a life of petty and not-so-petty crimes on Florida's gold coast. Hot on his trial is Fred Ward as a not-quite burned-out detective who loses his badge, gun and false teeth to Baldwin's savage charmer. Working from a script adapted from Charles Willeford's novel, director George Armitage generates the same dangerous wit that he would later bring to GROSSE POINTE BLANK.

Miami Blues is about a killer (Alec Baldwin) that hooks up with an ignorant young prositute and goes in a crime spree robbing and killing people with another cops gun. It isn't like Natural Born Killers so to say... It's kind of a comedy, but it never really goes anywhere. I think Jennifer Jason Leigh is a really good actress and Fred Ward provides abit of humor, but the whole film feels pointless and it never really gets better or extremely interesting.
