Meet John Doe (1941)

As a parting shot, fired reporter Ann Mitchell prints a fake letter from unemployed "John Doe," who threatens suicide in protest of social ills. The paper is forced to rehire Ann and hires John Willoughby to impersonate "Doe." Ann and her bosses cynically milk the story for all it's worth, until the made-up "John Doe" philosophy starts a whole political movement.

The story maybe bites off more than it can chew (Capra lamented the fact that they never could find quite the right ending), but, in many ways, in spite of (or, more likely, because) it's a little rougher around the edges than "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" or "It's a Wonderful Life," this almost seems like the quintessential Capra, with all of his ideals and concerns up there on the screen, fighting for a satisfying resolution that's just out of reach. As always with Capra, the film is warm, entertaining, funny, moving, and compelling, and it's also pretty dark. Stanwyck is the force of nature she always was.

This one was pretty good, especially as I felt that the plotline wasn't as predictable as it could have been.

The second best Christmas movie ever! Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwick are amazing in this and the story is timeless as well.
