...either an amazing example of self therapy through art or the most elaborate ploy to get laid ever. Then it gets really weird.

Loved it. A great documentary about a story that both tears you up and makes you wonder. It gets into the subject's head and shows us his world, grit and all.

Bitter-sweet serendipity certainly a triumph of what remains when everything gets beaten out of you. There was the fear that the documentary aspect would be depressing but there's a wonderfully engaging story line that kept me so interested I almost cheered near the end when he changed his shoes ...you'll see it's a personal freedom thing. It starts even before the audience acknowledges it and it leaves you a very satisfying ending that lingers even after you left the theater. This is entirely a director's victory. As much as Hogancamp is to be appreciated for his art Malmberg is to be applauded for the astute vision that lead him to believe there was a story here, pursue it and to present it so entertainingly. At a certain point you wonder if the subject matter would have fared so well in even the most capable hands of anyone else. Besides the marvel that anything so tragic could result in such success, it's an interesting parallel of the muse to the master; we could all use a little Marwencol of sorts

Very neutral story telling of a man recovering not only from his brain damage, but his life before the brain damage. The movie starts with a sympathetic portrayal of a man who is injured and looses all his knowledge and memories at 37 and has to relearn everything. Once he relearns the basic he has to reinvent himself. He learns from his friends who he was whether alcoholism failed marriage cross-dresser and artist. In recreating his life he chooses what qualities to carry forward. There is a parallel narrative of his hobby/Life/Art of building dioramas featuring him and his friends in 1/6-th scale living lives in WWII that parallel the events in his life.
