An amazing story of how a man, beaten so severely, he lost all memory of the first 38 years of his life, and cut off from needed mental and physical therapy, provided it to himself through a fantasy world he created that is also truly art. The filmmaker strikes just the right tone and lets you appreciate Mark Hogancamp's struggles, his talent and his fears and concerns as his work gets discovered.

Marwencol is a fantastic documentary that tells the inspiring story of Mark Hogencamp. After having been beaten by five men and having been left brain damaged, Hogencamp was forced to re-learn everything about himself and his life all over again. After his money ran out and he could no longer maintain receiving professional therapy, Mark decided to create a therapy for himself - he built his own little town populated by dolls, each of whom is an alter-ego of someone in his real life. The documentary proves to be not only a study of Mark and how his therapy became art, but also a deeper insight into the human psyche. While most documentaries often seem fast-paced and exploitative of their subject matter, this film was made with care for the subject and his feelings. Marwencol is a documentary that everyone should see, as there is much to be taken from it.
