Marooned (1969)

After spending several months in an orbiting lab, three astronauts prepare to return to Earth only to find their de-orbit thrusters won't activate. After initially thinking they might have to abandon them in orbit, NASA decides to launch a daring rescue. Their plans are complicated by a hurricane headed towards the launch site—and a shrinking air supply in the astronauts' capsule.

When I first saw 'Marooned' I sat down frozen while not knowing this was actually a dramatic thriller - in space. Like '2001' the story was too slow for me, though there is no moving orchestral music to listen to here. Nevertheless, the story of a rescue mission in space is an appealing one, a disaster to deal with and would remind me of the real-life 'Apollo 13' mission a year later.

It's hard to believe this film won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, the year after 2001: A Space Odyssey, since the effects in this film absolutely pale in comparison. Several other reviewers here seem to have found the film rather dull, but I think that's a bit unfair. It could perhaps have benefited from tighter editing, but there are some quite good performances, and it's a rather more realistic space movie than most - even presaging some of the physiological effects of prolonged weightlessness, which at the time had never been tested. Would it be too irreverrent of me to suggest that when Pruett went out to try to fix the engine at the end, he should have said, "I'm going for a space walk. I may be some time."

Underated and bashed unfairly!! Great insite into the inner workings of the space program. Most accurate movie about manned space until Apollo 13.

I suspect these distinctly disillusioned effects go with endeavours to inject human interest into a basically mechanistic movie. Where the human interest leads is another question.

It was a good story and had good acting but poorly edited. I found that this movie just dragged, and everything was explained verrrrrrrrrrrry...Slowley. I ended up fast forwarding it to the end and saw basically most of the latter half of the movie in lil clips which explianed the movie just fine. I was disappointed cause it could have been a good movie. 1/5 Stars
