Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures (2016)

Nude men in rubber suits, close-ups of erections, objects shoved in the most intimate of places—these are photographs taken by Robert Mapplethorpe, known by many as the most controversial photographer of the twentieth century. Openly gay, Mapplethorpe took images of male sex, nudity, and fetish to extremes that resulted in his work still being labelled by some as pornography masquerading as art. But less talked about are the more serene, yet striking portraits of flowers, sculptures, and perfectly framed human forms that are equally pioneering and powerful.

Look at the Pictures: It restores a sense of the forbidden to Mapplethorpe that's been lost in the years of worship.

The most revelatory facet of Look At The Pictures is what you hear: Bailey and Barbato accessed a trove of audio recordings in which Mapplethorpe discusses himself with disarming frankness.

Tim Murphy 15 Apr 2018

A new HBO documentary on the late photographer is smart enough to realize that his power derived from his creepiness.

Danny Leigh 20 Apr 2016

Appreciative of its subject's gifts, frank about his flaws. You can also use it as a guide to the 1980s art world and the journey of Manhattan from scuzzy bohemia to real estate gold mine.

Leigh Paatsch 20 Sep 2016

This look at the life, times and legacy of the late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe works just fine as an entry-level overview of the subject.
