Mao’s Last Dancer (2009)

At the age of 11, Li was plucked from a poor Chinese village by Madame Mao's cultural delegates and taken to Beijing to study ballet. In 1979, during a cultural exchange to Texas, he falls in love with an American woman. Two years later, he managed to defect and went on to perform as a principal dancer for the Houston Ballet and as a principal artist with the Australian Ballet.

This is a lovely and emotional film that is just right. So, if we must watch "real" lives then this one would be my pick. Never goes over the top.

A lot more powerful and emotional than I had initially imagined. The dance sequences are something to behold and I gotta admit, the end made me tear up. Inspirational story, more so that it was based on a true story. Felt like it omitted a few things, but with the running time as it is, it's probably fair enough.

This was in my top 3 favourite movies at TIFF...at the start, the movie was a bit linear - but the parts after the lead wants to defect to the U.S. really grabbed me...it was a 1 hanky movie.

1st I will say I love that it was filmed in Houston Texas, I was able to see places in my hometown. As for this film, the story the actor's performance. Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!
