Mao’s Last Dancer (2009)

At the age of 11, Li was plucked from a poor Chinese village by Madame Mao's cultural delegates and taken to Beijing to study ballet. In 1979, during a cultural exchange to Texas, he falls in love with an American woman. Two years later, he managed to defect and went on to perform as a principal dancer for the Houston Ballet and as a principal artist with the Australian Ballet.

This was in my top 3 favourite movies at TIFF...at the start, the movie was a bit linear - but the parts after the lead wants to defect to the U.S. really grabbed me...it was a 1 hanky movie.

Very emotionally poignant story and beautiful dancing throughout. Ballet is not a style of dance that you see very often nowadays. Realistic portrayal of historical events, what China was like in the 1970s, and the differences between Chinese and American cultures.

Amazing movie from start to finish! The performances are just fantastic and the story just makes you feel part of it. It is also very emotional and gives you that "kick" that we all need when we think things are just not going to change... Don't miss it!
