Mao’s Last Dancer (2009)

At the age of 11, Li was plucked from a poor Chinese village by Madame Mao's cultural delegates and taken to Beijing to study ballet. In 1979, during a cultural exchange to Texas, he falls in love with an American woman. Two years later, he managed to defect and went on to perform as a principal dancer for the Houston Ballet and as a principal artist with the Australian Ballet.

This film has been winning people choice awards all round the world for good reason. Forget the critics. This film will take you back to the wonderful America of old and open your eyes to the immense poverty that existed in China during Mao's reign, which makes Li Cunxin's story all the more incredible. It is a fascinating account which will make you both laugh and cry. Just wonderful!

Every superlative comes to mind for this film, even if every next event in the film seemed almost perfectly predictable. I sometimes have a hard time separating the personal connection from the artistic and technical merit of a film, however, and that came to me in spades here. I went to China, in 1980, just as China was opening up to the West, as a Yale-China teaching fellow at Wuhan University, and my life has take a course of its own, it sometimes seems, ever since. This is what appears to have happened to Li Cunxin, three years my junior, on his arrival in Houston in that same year. Of course, I would dare not compare myself to his talent, but there is a certain amount of historical connection here, and I felt like at some level I was watching my own life unfold before my eyes. Maybe that's why this film gets five stars for me.

A remarkable and inspirational true story about the life of Li Cunxin, one of the best ballet dancers in the world. It draws in the audiences' emotions and then touches their deepest of hearts.

Beautiful! There's no other word for it. Go watch this inspirational story of Li's rise to fame from a poor remote village in China.

Fantastic movie - the dancing was amazing & I loved the story! Maybe because of 3 reasons: (1) my daughter did ballet for 13 years (2) the movie was partly made here in Australia (3) I learnt to speak Manderin last year and to understand a little more about the Chinese culture.
