Although it has been over a week since I saw this film, not a lot has stuck with me. The plot's logic is certainly lacking but I wouldn't go so far as to say it was intelligible, which is pretty much what the synopsis on the DVD case warns you of. Basically girl gets given an evil eye in Egypt and evil stuff happens when she gets back home. Kids dramatically disappear and then reappear a few scenes later without much explanation, eyesight is taken away and given back (without much explanation) and most of the time everyone's relatively cool about it. Very light on gore and well, anything much of interest really. The main set piece comes at the end when a guy's stuffed birds come to life and attack him but by then it's too little, too late.

Not one of fulci`s best, the over reliance on spaggeti western camera shots and angles border on parody, it is fun to watch how when a simple insert shot or cutaway would suffice fulci instead chooses to create epic camera shots involving tilts with and focus shifts to highlight the slightest thing ie a clock ticking a heart machine beeping, thats part of the fun this slight story should be forgotten,( it seems to be ripping off the poorer exorcist 2 movie) but this loopy camera work and straight faced stupidity has its own unique charms.

Again GREAT THANKS to SHAWN SMITH of BLACKEST HEART MEDIA for bringing this Soundtrack to CD. Manhattan Baby is my favorite FULCI soundtrack. Yet the film is only so-so but its a classic nevertheless. I first saw this on Lightning Video (a subsidiary of Vestron Video) in the summer of 1986--from THE BOX OFFICE video store in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania (in the same Plaza as Acme). Its in Cinemascope and the videotape was pan & scan and everything was cropped (or cut-off) from the edges of the screen. A scorpion, for instance, would literally wander off the right edge of the screen. Finally ANCHOR BAY came into being in 1996 and MANHATTAN BABY came to DVD in 2001 in all its 2:35.1 ASPECT RATIO GLORY!!!!!! (the movie is still only so-so even with the letter-boxing, but its still . . . a classic) Clive Barker is a TOTAL FAN of Fulci and rips-off the ending of MANHATTAN BABY in Hellraiser.

DULL to the extreme. There is nothing memorable or even remotely entertaining about this movie. The whole time I was watching it I was just concentrating really really hard on trying to give a fuck, needless to say I was unsuccessful. I usually love Fulci, but this was an insufferable bore.
