It is pointless either to review or rank a film like this . It is an ICON for anybody who really cares about cinema. Even 80 years back it's more fresh, emotional and powerful than anything you see in modern multiplex cinemas.

This film was used to introduce Russian Soviets to the wonder of cinema. Vertov played for keeps: for him, cinema was not a tool for Marxism, it was a living breathing organ of Marxism.

Easily one of the best Russian experimental silent documentaries from the 20s I've ever seen--wait, scratch that. This is one of the best films I've ever seen. With jaw-dropping editing, innovation, and experiment, this was just breathtaking. This film does everything Koyaanisqatsi does, but did it earlier and better. I saw it with a very modern score, but it fit so perfectly because this film has such an incredibly modern feel. I actually could not believe what I was watching. Viewing this masterpiece was one of the most fulfilling cinematic experiences, even decades later. Entrancing.
