Man of the West (1958)

Heading east to Fort Worth to hire a schoolteacher for his frontier town home, Link Jones is stranded with singer Billie Ellis and gambler Sam Beasley when their train is held up. For shelter, Jones leads them to his nearby former home, where he was brought up an outlaw. Finding the gang still living in the shack, Jones pretends to be ready to return to a life crime.

A good western film about a man who changed from bad to good and is revisited by his old acquaintances.

WIDESCREEN. Interesante y satisfactoriamente dramática. La dirección de Anthony Mann es genial, pero el guión tiene algunos problemas de credibilidad. / Interesting and satisfactorily dramatic. Anthony Mann's direction is great, but the screenplay has some credibility problems.

An ex-train robber has left it all behind to start a new life. While on a train, some robber's attempt to rob the train and in the chaos of it all, he is thrown from the train and left in the middle of nowhere. A dance hall girl and gambler were also left behind and together they stumble across a cabin which happens to be occupied by the members of his own gang, who all of which aren't too happy to see him. Man of the West is a beautifully shot film about an ex-train robber who is forced to help his old mates rob a bank against his will. The framing is superb with some awe-inducing wide shots. Gary Cooper does his thing as the character stuck between what is right and wrong, and the script really captures the feelings of this man. Its a western that is clearly about this one man, and the choices that he is inevitable forced to take. The love interest in Julie London does a good job as well as Coopers character grows close to her as the film progresses.

A tough, bleak, superbly acted and directed western. Gary Cooper and Lee J Cobb have never been better and Julie London's fine performance is highly underrated.
