Mame (1974)

The madcap life of eccentric Mame Dennis and her bohemian, intellectual arty clique is disrupted when her deceased brother's 10-year-old son Patrick is entrusted to her care. Rather than bow to convention, Mame introduces the boy to her free-wheeling lifestyle, instilling in him her favorite credo, "Life is a banquet, and most poor sons of bitches are starving to death.

Mame is painful to watch. The jokes that are supposed to be clever and biting come off as being mean when delivered by Lucille Ball.

A well adapted musical turned, as unfortunately often is the case, into a cinematic yawnfest that casts the wrong people in the wrong places. Lucille Ball is a nightmare as the charmingly brash but elegant, Auntie Mame, and Bea Arthur simply isn't as on top of her game as she was when she performed in this with Angela Landsbury. By all accounts a fairly dull affair.

This is such an underrated film! I adore the Rosalind Russell version of course but this version holds up quite well in my opinion. Lucille Ball had just the right amount of edginess to play Mame well and Bea Arthur is magnificent!

Go easy on Lucille Ball. She's one of the best actresses of the 20th century. Mame is a delightful musical.
