Captivating documentary about the creation of, and reaction to, the breakthrough play "The Boys in the Band."

A bird's eye and objective view of a cultural landmark and where it fits within the overall history of the gay rights movement. The fact that an entire generation is unfamiliar with the work or Stonewall and can only trace their identity from Splash is funny, sad and hopefully not the norm. The disconnect between the critical applause for this film and the Facebook reviews is a little disheartening.

Very interesting look at the making of the iconic gay film "The Boys in the Band." Although that film has not dated well at all, this documentary puts it all in perspective. The behind-the-scenes machinations of getting the play and movie made are fascinating. Also fascinating â?? the behind the scenes look at 60s era Hollywood.

Crowley's biting portrait feels painfully dated, but in a way that's the point: Pioneers fight so those who follow can take their battles for granted.

Sometimes, it errs on the side of inclusiveness, with banal commentary from gay reality-TV shows. Taking the broad view mostly works, however.
