Magic Trip: Ken Kesey's Search for a Kool Place (2011)

A freewheeling portrait of Ken Kesey and the Merry Prankster's fabled road trip across America in the legendary Magic Bus. In 1964, Ken Kesey, the famed author of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," set off on a legendary, LSD-fuelled cross-country road trip to the New York World's Fair. He was joined by "The Merry Band of Pranksters," a renegade group of counterculture truth-seekers, including Neal Cassady, the American icon immortalized in Kerouac's "On the Road," and the driver and painter of the psychedelic Magic Bus.

I've never been a big fan of films made for those people who can relate to drug use, in particularly, tripping. This film is one of those I should have passed up but intrigue told me to give it a shot. As soon as I saw the references to "On the Road" I knew it wasn't for me as that is one of the few books I couldn't get through. This is just a film about an almost non-eventful bus ride across America with the man who wrote one flew over the cuckoos next and his entourage of middle class gimps dropping acid whenever they can. The film makes it out to be a historical event, I don't know why.

At its best, Magic Trip evokes the freewheeling, idealistic, psychedelic vibe of an era's origins; at worst, it's a film in which people narrate their own druggie home movies.

Despite the incoherence and poor quality of the source material, fine editing and an interesting story to tell makes this an immensely enjoyable document about the people that kick started the psychedelic 60s

Stephen Holden 03 Aug 2011

Magic Trip is the cinematic equivalent of a yellowed scrapbook whose pictures are accompanied by sketchy captions created after the fact.

Monica Castillo 30 Aug 2011

Sometimes the footage is shaky, and the story threatens to derail itself by spinning off on too many tangents, but ultimately the rough-and-ready style fits with the experimental spirit of the Pranksters.
