A freewheeling portrait of Ken Kesey and the Merry Prankster's fabled road trip across America in the legendary Magic Bus. In 1964, Ken Kesey, the famed author of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," set off on a legendary, LSD-fuelled cross-country road trip to the New York World's Fair. He was joined by "The Merry Band of Pranksters," a renegade group of counterculture truth-seekers, including Neal Cassady, the American icon immortalized in Kerouac's "On the Road," and the driver and painter of the psychedelic Magic Bus.

The directors rarely go beyond the experiential to provide larger, lasting insight into the journey's generational and historical importance. As such, the comedown from this Trip is a real bitch.

Good documentary with some amazing original footage. Worth watching around the same time as Magical Mystery Tour to appreciate the difference between the two sensibilities.

Alex Gibney and Alison Ellwood manage to cut through the underbrush of this incoherent material to create a clear, if repetitive, through-line and put it into context, with footnote-type stops for side trips of social and historic significance.

The film is at it's best as a time capsule of a particular time, a brief golden age in America, and a particular event, Kesey's cross-country voyage of discovery.
