Maestro, tells the story of how a group of people found refuge and a call for life outside the mainstream. What evolved was a scene that set the ground work for what was to come in dance music culture worldwide, a rare insight into the secret underground world. It's the first time this story is told in a motion Picture, included in the film are pioneer dance music DJs and producers, "founding fathers", its center being Larry Levan, as well as high-profile DJs of today. Opting for a more personal and candid approach, MAESTRO shows the true history of the people through a realistic creative aesthetic. Tracing the underground's dance origin, MAESTRO brings out a real understanding of this intense lifestyle, and the lives they lived and died for.

Fascinating subject matter--DJ Larry Levan and the Paradise Garage--held back by a static and uninvolving directorial presence. I lapped it up because of its specialist appeal, but this wouldn't be a good starting point for those uninitiated into disco history.

A loving tribute to the spirit of underground house music and Larry Levan. Along the way, you are exposed to a repressed community that came together to form a movement that still exists today. A movement based on general acceptance, peace, individuality and celebrating diversity. This documentary is recommended for anyone who is into house, deep house, soulful house, garage. It is faithful to the scene, covering the Garage and The Loft. The moment where Francois K talks about the effect of AIDS on the scene is quite moving, as this film deftly dances between talking heads, photos, old clips, and hot tracks. Love it.

Pretty horribly made documentary, but yet, an important one which, in its muddled way, chronicles the birth of disco and club culture. Highly recommended for all fan of classic disco and current DJ culture alike.
