After serving 12 years behind bars for armed robbery, tough guy Hank McCain finds himself the pawn of a ruthless mob runt's rebellion against a high level don. Cassavettes stars as the titular character, freed from prison early for use in a convoluted heist. He finds himself less interested in the job that everyone else has planned for him and more in his own agenda, building into some nicely done violence in the final reel. Co-starring a young Peter Falk and the always watchable Britt Ekland, this one is well worth a look. Rent that mother.

(T)his Italian-American crime movie cocktail has some great flavors in the mix, thanks to Cassavetes and to the unraveling chaos that director Montaldo follows to the bitter end.

The aggression of John Cassavetes is scary. The way he speaks--barks at his son, the way he grabs a man by the arm, the way he stares Britt Ekland down, giving her no choice but to fall in love with him. It's twisted stuff. So when, Cassavetes finally picks up a machine gun you really expect him to go completely nuts. You want him to blast his way through hordes of mob goons. Ratt-A-Tatt-Tatt!!!! And he kills plenty of people...but it's not quite as exploitatively satisfying as I was hoping for, and the ending is a bit of a drag too. Still, Cassavetes is beastly and worth your time. And the brief appearance of Gena Rowlands as Cassavetes's former flame is stunning. VF.

Killer Ennio Morricone soundtrack and Peter "Columbo" Falk as a gangster! This movie is fantastic. This was also my introduction to the incredible force of cinematic energy known as John Cassavetes - now one of my favorite actors and filmmakers of all time.
