Cruz keeps things engaging but she's really up against it in a film that's mawkish, melodramatic and sometimes comically misjudged.

Not unlike Ali MacGraw in the equally apocryphal Love Story, the closer our heroine inches toward death's door, the more physically attractive she becomes. Phooey!

This is mawkish, Channel 5-afternoon fare. But it is such a captivating performance from Cruz, that she lifts it to a higher level. The little girl imagery could be binned though.
