Luminarias (2000)

Welcome to Luminarias-where hot spicy dish gets served up with a Latin twist by four successful friends from East LA...with very discriminating taste in men! When separated divorce attorney Andrea finds herself guilty of falling for her white and Jewish opposing council, her three single friends choose sides in the ongoing and often hilarious debate over race and sex. As they discover just how much negative stereotypes color their relationships with men-and even with each other-it becomes clear that the search for Mr. Right is not exactly black and white!

It is a traffic jam of broken hearts, fluxing racial identities and deplorable outfits that has everything but a salsa overhaul of "I Will Survive."

David Sterritt 16 Jun 2016

The movie is very small in scale, but the performances are appealing and Fernandez's screenplay casts an interesting light on the main characters' self-images as Latina women.

Chris Gore 15 Mar 2018

Not for me, and in spite of that, I found it really funny, smart and sweet. I enjoyed it.

Elizabeth Weitzman 02 Sep 2005

There are so many small, satisfying moments when the women are allowed to be real that it's a jolt each time they become superficial symbols.

Mick LaSalle 30 Apr 2009

An occasionally charming, sometimes amateurish film .
