Lou! (2014)

Lou, a creative and dreamy 12-year-old girl, lives alone with her mother in an orange building with tons of little balconies that give access to the roof. Mina has been her best friend since kindergarten, and Lou has been in love with Tristan, one of her neighbors, since elementary school. Her mother has relinquished her own personal happiness of late so as to devote herself to her daughter, but their little bubble bursts when Mom meets a man and Lou at last dares speak to Tristan.

The effect of watching 'Lou!' is like being suffocated in a giant cardboard box full of Care Bears.

It's a commercial French picture of the kind that generally doesn't cross the Channel well: a bit DayGlo, a bit cutesy, a bit fey.

Cody C 08 Sep 2015

Teen version of Amelie, but so stuffed with whimsy and cute camera quirks that it overlooks the necessity for a decent story featuring anything meaningful.

For anyone who's not a Francophone tween girl, the film likely will be a tedious, precious exercise in indulgence.

Tracy Moore 03 Nov 2015

Quirky French subtitled film about growing up has profanity.
