The approach certainly makes Liyana unique, but be aware that it gives you a glimpse and not the full picture of these kids.

Liyana is one of those rare films that you can't put your finger on because is it a cartoon, live action, a documentary, a fictional story, is it meant for kids, or adults, do I laugh, or cry... And it is everything, and so much more. Set in the beautiful country of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), the orphaned children build and transform their story of Liyana in ways the imagination and those with deep, challenging lives only can. The cinematoghraphy, the animations, the storytelling, and the precious, amazing children all make it a must see film.

Aaron and Amanda Kopp take the somewhat rigid format of documentary filmmaking and infuse it with folklore and fairy tales.

Sheri Linden 28 Feb 2018

A lyrical work that’s as bright and captivating as it is poignant.

Roger Moore 07 Oct 2018

Liyana is still a wonder, and the story the kids cook up themselves every bit as epic as the one Disney plagiarized for “The Lion King.” This effort turns out so delightful that somebody should hire these children as focus group consultants the next time Hollywood wants to tell a tale of Africa.
