Little Otik (2001)

When a childless couple learn that they cannot have children, it causes great distress. To ease his wife's pain, the man finds a piece of root in the backyard and chops it and varnishes it into the shape of a child. However the woman takes the root as her baby and starts to pretend that it is real.

another classic film in the baby carved out of a tree trunk genre. I guess its a dark comedy, but I'm still not sure.

Svankmajer takes a fairytale and turns it into something realistically horrible. Despite the obvious fact that roots do not become actual children, the film is convincing enough to make me sit on the edge of my seat as I wonder how things will end.

This is one of those films that pulls at your viceral strings. I love Svankmajer's twisted mind and this one takes the cake. That scene wherein she is first seen breastfeeding little Otik left me nauseated, amused, and unnaturally curious. This movie is exactly the type of movie I can't stop thinking about. There is nothing overtly deep or political about it, just a mind fuck . . . sweeet.
