Expertly edited, but the doc just failed to engage me. Watching was like flipping through a dull coffee-table book.

Listen to Britain is a friendly glimpse of civilian life in wartime Britain, packed with interesting and treasurable images.

Jennings worked for the Crown film unit and made many propaganda films during the the 2nd world war. Many of these are interesting but stick to the formula of images plus loud stirring voice over of the "Gerry won't beat us" variety. "Listen to Britain" is very different. It's a film poem in which there is no voice over. The sounds and images are those of people getting on with their life as the war rages on. A beautiful landmark film - all the more remarkable because it was made at a time when it was considered necessary to be bellicose.

This is a fantastic short film, showing scenes of wartime Britain set to music, with no narration. The lack of a commentary makes the film perhaps more moving; it was presumably intended as propaganda, but this can be completely forgotten as very natural scenes of what must been ordinary life at a very extraordinary time are shown without comment.

An interesting time capsule film. It is a documentary and it's only 20 minutes long but the fact that it captures Britain during WWII, is quite remarkable. I wouldn't be surprised if the filmmakers were inspired by the Russian film Man with the Movie Camera. Both are essentially silent and both capture a slice of life. Listen to Britain does have sound effects and music though. In some respects it's a per-cursor to films like Koyaanisqatsi and Baraka.
