Life of an American Fireman (1903)

Porter's sequential continuity editing links several shots to form a narrative of firemen responding to a house fire. They leave the station with their horse drawn pumper, arrive on the scene, and effect the safe rescue of a woman from the burning house. But wait, she tells them of her child yet asleep in the burning bedroom...

So far, my favorite early 1900s silent short!

In the very first film of all time to ever show a multi-perspective shot, a fireman dreams of his family trapped in a house-fire and how they are saved by firemen! The scene shows the outside destruction of a home, followed by a transition to show in inside ruining a families lives. As they are saved by the fireman, the scene repeats a second time, showing the outside perspective of what happened that the audience didn't see the first time. Being a silent film, it is hard to love such a basic story, but seeing as it is the first film of it's kind, it is a very small piece of magnificent filmmaking!

Very early film of firemen doing heroic rescues, albeit staged heroic rescues...

This 6 min. shot gave the birth to action in film. Life of an American Fireman is lodged for copyright in Washington on the 21st January 1903. A true mavrel of a film.
