A mixed experience. I found the factual parts and interviews regarding the history of Okinawa very interesting - not to say shocking - while for the most part all the sequences in front of the computer just confused me, with a somewhat meditative feel, but I clearly prefer both La Jetà (C)e and Sans Soleil, of the Chris Marker directed films I've seen.

Watching it in the era of Twitter does make "Level Five" feel like a distant lamentation on the failure of technology - indeed of cinema itself. It's a record of the questions we once asked, and how we essentially already lost the fight.

Level Five (1996) is a poetic if occasionally opaque film essay on the 1945 Battle of Okinawa.

Its themes are a bit nostalgic and some of its technology looks dated, but there is nothing else in theaters now that feels quite as new.

The most extraordinarily contemporary thing about Marker's intricate matrix (in a William Gibson rather than a Wachowskis sense of the concept) is how beautifully it lines up with and enlarges the contexts of recent films.
