Le Cercle Rouge (1970)

When French criminal Corey gets released from prison, he resolves to never return. He is quickly pulled back into the underworld, however, after a chance encounter with escaped murderer Vogel. Along with former policeman and current alcoholic Jansen, they plot an intricate jewel heist. All the while, quirky Police Commissioner Mattei, who was the one to lose custody of Vogel, is determined to find him.

The only problem? No red circle. Seriously. A film called The Red Circle and there's no red circle? They should have called it 'Slightly Tinted Blue' and Melville could have written his nonsense opening about fate and coincidence and the Buddha and called it 'Slightly Tinted Blue' instead of 'The Red Circle.'

I concur with the 'sheer class' critique. I can't decide what aspects of the film I enjoy more. The robbery scene is breathtaking, and the surprisingly careful and electric interaction between Delon and Volonte creates a wistful tension.
