Lawn Dogs (1997)

In the affluent, gated community of Camelot Gardens, bored wives indiscriminately sleep around while their unwitting husbands try desperately to climb the social ladder. Trent, a 21-year-old outsider who mows the neighborhood lawns, quietly observes the infidelities and hypocrisies of this overly privileged society. When Devon, a 10-year-old daughter from one family, forges a friendship with Trent, things suddenly get very complicated.

one can't help make comparisons with the superior American Beauty, but whereas that was polished, on the mark and poetic this is rough around the edges, beautifully fairytale like interlaced with the horrors of postmodern life. the ending takes your breath away. this has become a favourite instantly.

Lawn Dogs (1997) - "My uncle had a truck like that. He was Russian, from Indiana... born on the wrong side of the train." - Devon Camelot Gardens is home to bored housewives who sleep around while their husbands scratch and claw their way up the social ladder. 21-year old Trent (Sam Rockwell) lives outside "the wall" that surrounds Camelot Gardens, but mows the lawns of its wealthy inhabitants. Your basic crazy man, Trent does fine until Devon (Mischa Barton), a fearless (and equally crazy) 10-year old daughter of one of his customers, gets under his skin. What started clever, gradually descended into stereotype-filled silliness and then, right at the end, it went totally berserk. An excellent score, some great moments... and some not so great ones, too.

Dare to see it. It's fairy-tale, cruel American Beauty look into suburban America and it's Mircha Barton's truly good role. The ending scenes are mesmerising.
