Sobering, harrowing, and ultimately realistic with none of the usual preachy-ness that comes with most documentaries.

It's an intense and tense time, unsurprisingly, and superbly realized by Lixin's unflinching yet compassionate eye, the Zhang family his microcosm for the Chinese macrocosm.

This played even better as a family drama, than a documentary... but I guess it's kind of the perfect movie to watch over Chinese New Year. Now head over to your parents and give them a hug.
