Last Summer (1981)

Gilbert, his brother Boule and some friends live in Estaque. Between carelessness, petty theft and social gloom, they feel like the outcasts of a society where Gilbert has no future. This is the "last summer" that he intends to spend there, dragging his idleness, nevertheless beginning a romance with Josiane, a nice worker.

Provocative tale of three teenagers (Barbara Hershey, Richard Thomas, and Bruce Davison) who are beginning to get hormones and wanting sex. They start to experiment with one another, and drag another poor girl (Cathy Burns) into the mix. Could be compared to "The Last Picture Show" released two years later, but does not have the same greatness as that film does. However, it is still interesting and they are quite a few memorable scenes. One notable segment is when the three teenagers take care of seagull and try to help it fly again. Unfortunately, it does not survive, thanks to Hershey's anger issues. Performances are strong, especially by Burns, and the cinematography, for which the film takes place on Fire Island, off the coast of Long Island (I thought further south than that).

Barbara Hershey, Richard Thomas and Bruce Davison star as three affluent teens vacationing on Fire Island for the summer. They meet and bond over the discovery of an injured seagull, and form a tight social unit driven by insecurity and sexual tension. Along comes Catherine Burns, a less attractive, more socially awkward teen who insinuates herself into their group. She may be more awkward, but she's more confident about who she is, and her presence destabilizes the group leading to violence. Frank Perry's follow-up to "The Swimmer" is a brutal, insightful film. The three well-known stars (all very early in their film careers) are excellent, but it's Burns who really shines here.

Absolutely brutal. A more similar message to Easy Rider than say, Y Tu Mama Tambien, but with even more of a shock value if you can imagine it. Great musings on of the loss of innocence, that half-baked teen wisdom- desire, hate and peer pressure all thrown in together- and the pitfalls of the 60s sexual revolution.

Odd to see a film so frank in its depiction of teenage exploration and lust. It certainly is rough around the edges but has to be admired for predating the likes of Bernardo Bertolucci's The Dreamers by more than 30 years.
