This is about the fourth time that I've sat through this film and it has become clearer with every viewing what the film is about. I'm still not sure what to think of this film after those viewings. I can appreciate the style of this and what it's saying however it's neither easy to connect with nor understand. I'll probably have to go back and watch Pickpocket now because I remember that having the same style and finding that similarly difficult to engage with. Bresson's greatest film. Absolutely nothing extraneous, no false melodrama or florid filmmaking in this tale of a man unjustly accused of a crime. Beautifully precise in its cinematography, with an eye to all the telling details.

Okay, Bresson has just moved up in my list of favorite filmmakers. "L'Argent" is his last film and arguably his darkest, bleakest one yet (and from Bresson, this is saying something). When two teenage boys decide to use counterfeit money, this sets off a series of events which eventually leads a decent man to turn into a life of crime and murder. The entire film is just extraordinary but the final act is nothing short of masterful.

A dark, absurdly comical tale of crime, punishment, and damn bad luck as small scale events escalate into violence, tragedy and fun times with an axe. Somewhere between Fargo and A Clockwork Orange, Bresson's final film is beautifully shot and directed and in a consistantly ironic sstyle. A modern masterpiece of french new-wave-influenced cinema. 10/10
