Language of a Broken Heart (2011)

A neurotic best-selling author on love, with the heightened emotional capacity of a woman, can write so eloquently about the subject, but can't keep girls from leaving him. After he comes back to his apartment in New York City to find his fiancé with another man, he returns to his hometown and the only woman he ever left, his mother. There, he renews his relationships with the people that matter the most, his family and friends. By a simple twist of fate he meets a free-spirited bookseller who challenges him to let people appreciate him for who he is.

The rom-com genre keeps scraping bottom, and this particular annoyance is about as low as you can get.

An entertaining enough Prodigal Son drama about a just-dumped love guru who finds the girl of his dreams when he returns home from the big city to lick his wounds.

Structurally, this is a fairly standard love story. What's unique about it, and to me very endearing, is the character writer/star Juddy Talt (Nick) creates...a straight man who is a hopeless romantic of the kind we usually associate as feminine. In that way, it turns gender roles upside down by making him sensitive but not effeminate, not something I've seen before. The story is well directed by Rocky Powell, apparently his first effort. But this is Talt's film and whether you like it or not depends on whether you like Nick. I did. It's often funny and cleverly written with awkward moments and it's refreshing to see his take on being a non-stereotypical male.

Que pedo Juddy Talt es como el hijo de Ethan Hawke y Ashton Kutcher o_O... Debo admitir que se me hizo entretenida pero es muy mala e infantil... no la volvería a ver.

Exactly the movie that one expects it to be -- a frustrating quality for some, but smooth medicine for those who trust and like writer-actors' puppy dog tales that unfold loosely in the vein of Ed Burns.
