La La Land feels like a throwback and also like something we've never seen before, resulting in a dreamy musical that hits just about every note.

The actors carry the music in their gait, their gestures, the rhythms of their speech, so that their singing and dancing is a small but exquisite step up from the way that they normally talk and walk. To rhapsodize about La La Land is to complete the experience. You want to sing its praises, literally.

What the two actors lack in vocal polish they make up for in commitment — and chemistry. La La Land is the third film to romantically pair Gosling and Stone, after "Crazy, Stupid, Love" and "Gangster Squad," and that history of onscreen relationships fortifies their playful rapport:

I was blown away by this movie, both as a technical masterpiece and a poignantly human story. I created an account just to rate it, and I like neither musicals, nor jazz. I do, however, like cinema - and that is exactly what this is. 24k cinema.

Damien Chazelle gives us another solid example why he is one of the best new directors of the last decade with his ever growing signature style of crisp production design, sublime cinematography, and a mastery of all things to do with music by perfectly resurrecting the big budget movie musical. Stunning single take numbers, wonderful choreography and composition, and of course the engaging chemistry of the two leads make La La Land a perfectly reasonable choice for the best film of 2016.
