Its amazing how similar and yet how really different this and the birdcage ( which was based on this) can be. This funny for different reasons then the birdcage is and yet the birdcage lifts whole scene and gets different laughs.

Of all the versions, imitations, and sequels, the first 1978 French picture is the best and funniest, a fresh look at machoism and drag queens; the gay couple is superb.

The origina l French masterpiece of a wedding, a gay man, and his son's attempt to hide his dad's gendder bending issues, because the son is getting married to a woman he loves.

A fabulously fun French farce! Superbly written and directed with fantastic performances from all concerned, especially Ugo Tognazzi and the flamboyant Michel Serrault, this terrific comedy shouldn't be missed. Followed by two sequels and remade by the United States as 'The Birdcage' in 1996.
