Kwaidan (1965)

Taking its title from an archaic Japanese word meaning "ghost story," this anthology adapts four folk tales. A penniless samurai marries for money with tragic results. A man stranded in a blizzard is saved by Yuki the Snow Maiden, but his rescue comes at a cost. Blind musician Hoichi is forced to perform for an audience of ghosts. An author relates the story of a samurai who sees another warrior's reflection in his teacup.

Awesome, awesome movie! It's not scary at all, but damned moody with staggeringly beautiful execution that deftly combines theatre, painting, story, sound and image into a ghost story(s) like no other. I've never seen anything quite like this before.

All you J-horror fanatics need to take a step back and look to this and Jigoku for what started the genre. Kwaidan doesn't require creepy little girls whose face is shrouded by black hair to be terrifying for it possesses scares on all kinds of varying levels. I'd consider rating it higher, but to do so I would need to see the full uncut version released by Masters of Cinema in the UK. I'll get to it sooner or later.

How can this stylish a movie be that old..? Everyone attempting something similar after 1965 should be ashamed for not living up to this one. Or.. no shame, really. One of my all time favorites, this one.

one of the most eerie ghost movies ever; don't get too impatient with it, as it's like being immersed in pure Japanese traditional storytelling. It might not be very frightening, but it is quietly chilling, and gorgeously stylized in meditative camera movements, lavish production designs and sets (utilizing Toho for all its worth), and precise and demanding acting.

A must see for anyone who is a fan of Japanese films. It may not bee as scary as some of the more modern films, but it is truly one of the most visually stunning films ever made. Directed by a man with an eye like a painter. Magnificent!
