King of the Zombies (1941)

During World War II, a small plane somewhere over the Caribbean runs low on fuel and is blown off course by a storm. Guided by a faint radio signal, they crash-land on an island. The passenger, his manservant and the pilot take refuge in a mansion owned by a doctor. The quick-witted yet easily-frightened manservant soon becomes convinced the mansion is haunted by zombies and ghosts.

If you can get past the stereotypical manner in which black actors were used in this era, then you might actually like this movie. This movie is not about "modern" zombies, this movie deals with caribbean voodoo style zombies. I believe this was supposed to be a horror comedy, but in all frankness, I found it very difficult to stay mentally invested..the way the main black actor was portrayed seriously distracted me. Marguerite Whitten gave the best performance in the movie as the maid or cook or whatever she was..its a shame the rest of the cast didn't follow her lead.

It is great just for Mantan Moreland's play on word and physical comedy. If you are expecting a serious horror flick this is not your movie. Oh yes the chant they use is very catchy.

I feel this film would have been more enjoyable if it played more on the comedy aspects of the film. Indeed, the most enjoyable scenes featured Jeff, who, despite being a very stereotypical black character, was funny and very likable. Another notable performance comes from Henry Victor who, while not as creepy as Lugosi, Karloff, still pulls off the evil doctor working for (though they weren't allowed to say it at the time) the Nazis. It is not a particularly scary film, but there is still some creepiness to be found, especially from the score, which I discovered was actually nominated for an Oscar. A funny note about this movie is how a character is supposed to be from Ireland, but we only know this from an observation another character made and his occasional references to shamrocks. He even comments that "anybody can tell that I am", when asked if he was Irish...no we can't.

Using WW2 and Black comedians for a thrill in a supposedly zombie film, does not work!
