At first, I thought this Japanese action film was going to be sort of like YOJIMBO with monsters, but after the titular hero (a werewolf samurai) gets to the little village where the action takes place, a town based around a casino where gamblers go missing and there are kappa monsters in the swamp outside, it turns into sort of a riff on NIGHTBREED of all things. The first half of the movie is somewhat disjointed (there are short scenes with tonal shifts as the Yokai who run the casino go from scary to sympathetic, and flashbacks for our hero), and there is one character who's introduced abruptly and disappears just as abruptly, apparently only to set up a sequel. About halfway through though, the plot kicks in as Kibakichi befriends the monsters, and the human girl they have adopted, and gets drawn into a double-cross by a nearby clan of humans. The climax of the movie is a ludicrous, action-packed twenty-minutes or so of mayhem, and it's easy to forgive a movie its flaws, when it leaves you in a good mood at the end.

This was actually kind of boring. It didn't make a lot of sense either. I mean what happened to the girl with the boomerang? I did like the ninja turtles. That was funny.

Kibakichi is half man, half werewolf, all samurai and he kicks mean ass! It's said that if demons and humans meld, the world will go to hell.

this is definately lowbudget, but the story is just so intresting. Could humans and Yoki(demons) live together in piece?

Kibakichi is a werewolf samurai. He has a very awesome look. A mix between Native-American hobo and Road Warrior samurai. The movie was along the same quality as Shogun Assassin. A medium amount of blood and a goodly amount of swordplay. The monsters reminded me of the bad guys in Power Rangers. A little cheesy, but very Japanese. Some of the characters had very excellent tattoos, especially the woman. The plot was very mediocre, but also very Japanese. The outsiders come to the village and destroy the way of life. It doesn't get more nationalist than that. I have seen endless movies of this type. I hope the sequel is better. I won't hold my breath.
