Kes (1970)

Bullied at school and ignored and abused at home by his indifferent mother and older brother, Billy Casper, a 15-year-old working-class Yorkshire boy, tames and trains his pet kestrel falcon whom he names Kes. Helped and encouraged by his English teacher and his fellow students, Billy finally finds a positive purpose to his unhappy existence.

The Brian Glover/football scene must be the best 5 mins of film ever, could watch it over and over again, get down from there casper

A film i could never really get into when the text was required reading in school. On re-appraisal though this is a brilliant film, with lots of bleak humour typical of t' North. Brian Glover as the PE teacher, as you'll agree if you've seen this film, is absolutely priceless.

apart from being a classic the footall match is an exact replay of all my school PE lessons + just a few years before he died I watch Brian Glover in a play at the crucible theatre called 'United on a Wednesday' about the unlikely coming together of both Sheffield teams. The cast finished the play by taking the audience outside to watch them play a real 5 aside game - great to see, I'll never forget it.

Kes is an almost perfect movie: shot with real people, real language, real locations and real situations. The arc around the kestrel is horribly, sickeningly predictable though, an overdone metaphor, although the general pessimism of the film is part of its realism.
