Epperlein wields her microphone as if it were a weapon for revenge. And she and co-director Michael Tucker shoot in black-and-white, which lends the film a sense of authenticity and strange beauty.

Karl Marx City is at heart a psychological family drama—the story of a tightly knit household that outlived an oppressive society, only to find itself faced with a doubt about the past that amounts to an existential quandary.

Regardless, Karl Marx City offers an absolutely fascinating look into lives of relatively average German Democratic Republic citizens and documents how the communist system continues to generate karma for everyone it touched.

A key joy of Karl Marx City is its strong, arty aesthetic.

This documentary will help to convince you that Soviet style Communism forced on people of East Germany was destined to fail without intense surveillance by the state.
