Jailbait (2004)

Randy commits a crime that would normally get him probation and a hefty fine, but in the "three-strikes" world of justice, he finds himself locked up for 25 years. His cellmate Jake is a congenial yet remorseless lifer who casually informs Randy that he slit his wife's throat because she slept with another man just three months after they exchanged vows. Jake recognizes Randy's fear and offers him advice on how to make it in prison. But it soon becomes clear that Jake has much more than mentoring in mind as he takes Randy under his wing. "Jailbait" sets a darkly cerebral tone, juxtaposing brutality with the unattainable ideal of intimacy in the harshest of psychological environments.

A very gripping, thought provoking film, no easy feat since it mainly only has two actors in it and most of the movie takes place in one room! Of course it helps that one of the actors is Michael Pitt - honestly I am yet to see him put in a bad performance in a movie. He is fantastic in this one as Randy, a teenager sentanced to 25 years in prison for a minor offence, playing the character with such vulnerability and honesty that you really feel for him. The part at the end where his cellmate gives him the speech about why he is his friend (not wanting to say too much and spoil it for anyone) is really horrifying because this guy is pretty much a monster, but there is actually truth in what he says as well. I found myself thinking about this one long after I had watched it and feeling very unsettled by it. Excellent and highly recommended.

i almost fell asleep, but i suppose it's 'cause it was deep in the night. michael pitt playing his favourite role: teenage angst! violence! submission! gay! no, ok, i admit it's not that bad. the relationship between the two men it's fascinating, so raw. but this is all.

The film is essentially the interaction between two characters, cellmates. Both give strong performances.

A good study of both hell being other people and it's ambiguities. Oh and btw, neither the description you see on this page, nor the trailer - correspond to the correct film. Only the poster. See IMDB for correct description and trailer. This is no comedy.

A stagy, only mildly compelling prison drama that ends up feeling like purgatory to all involved.
