I'm in the camp of those who saw this without knowing anything about Susann. And in all honesty, that's probably why I enjoyed this more than most critics seemed to. If you dropped the real names and the Valley of the Dolls references in place of a fictional author and work, it'd probably be received better. The lead characters in the film pull their roles off with surprising sincerity and unabashed confidence. The script is cliched, but still moves at a pace that keeps viewers watching. Now having read up on Susann and the Valley book, I can imagine my reaction would be quite different if I had read it and expected an accurate bio-pic. This was not intended though to be a true biography, and for what it actually is it isn't bad.

Ahh the haunting world of Jackie Susann. Most people would look at her, portrayed by the legend Bette Midler, as pathetic. She whined, complained and nearly killed herself all for fame and glory. But if you take the time to get yourself involved and invested in Jackie's early days you realize that she was a sincere woman who wanted nothing more than to be loved and adored for what she loved and adored. After so many failed attempts at fame (stage, screen, movies) her husband Irving suggest writing a book. Write what she knows. However all Jackie knows is sex, pills, rejection and Hollywood-Hell... But then "All I know is tits... Ass... and the truth... And nobody writes about that". Finally what comes is her masterpiece Valley of the Dolls. There's much more after her success, which really just rips into your heart. The only fault of this movie is that it seems to end too quickly after the premiere of The Valley of the Dolls movie. Over all a good movie.

Critics get paid for their good reviews so do not believe them. Very good movie. Stockard Channing is a bonus. So sad that critics only give good marks to the ones that bribed wined and dined them.
