Tehran's air pollution has reached maximum levels because of thermal inversion. Unmarried 30-something Niloofar lives with her aged mother, and stays busy with her alterations shop. When doctors insist that her mother must leave smoggy Tehran for her respiratory health, Niloofar's brother and family elders decide that she must also move away to accompany her mother. Now Niloofar is torn between family loyalty and living her own life. As the youngest she has always obeyed their orders. Can she stand up for herself this time?

Dolatshahi is compelling as a woman torn between familial duty and self-determination, coming alive in one particular clothes-shop confrontation.

If its literal context is specific to Iran, the film also speaks to all of us about what happens when what we want clashes with what is expected of us.

Iran is not the only culture in which the care for an elderly, ailing parent tends to be left to the unmarried sister, whose chances for a career and for founding a family of her own diminish in the process. Inversion questions the assumptions that help married siblings justify the unequal distribution of the burden of care. It shows how people deceive themselves and others in justifying their self-serving behaviour. A compelling performance by a brilliant cast, whose portrayal is both sensitive and authentic.

It is an involving story, but I found it sometimes a little dessicated, and the ending rather shies away from the intractable dilemmas that had been so painful.

Inversion feels like a neo-realist movie. The settings appear tangible and authentic. The actors disappear into their characters. There is no soundtrack, just the noise of radios and ringtones.
