Inland Empire is honestly like being on the worst drug trip ever, without having taken anything. David Lynch made a modern masterpiece with Mulholland Drive, but Inland Empire is his most ambitious and experimental film to date. Lynch-isms (if that makes sense) are abound here, in the editing cuts, random scenes accompanied by droning music, an ambiguous and creepy villan, plot twists that change the entire context of the film, familiar Lynch collaborators (Stanton, Harring, Dern, Theroux, etc.) and an incredible sense of tension throughout. If theres any complaint, its that I never once felt eased by the film. I watched it alone, with the lights off and the volume way up, turning a simple movie night into an endurance test. I must say though, Laura Dern is perfect as the main character(s), and should have gotten at least a nomination, so criminal. If this review turns you off of the film, then I feel sorry for you. Because its one of the most engrossing and lasting films I've ever seen.

Lynch's ultimate exercise in style and creepiness, and oh what an exercise it is!

-probably the most complex, terrifying, surreal movie I have ever seen. After first viewing it I didn't really understand much of anything, but after the fourth time and a lot of thinking ive come up with what it means to me- although i feel like people could definitely see this movie different ways. The expierence of seeing this film reminded me of the first times I heard "Bitches Brew" from Miles, and had no clue what to make of it, but got goosebumps for most of it neverthe'less. Some people complained that this movie is just "Mulholland Dr. on acid", which i would strongly disagree with. Although this movie does take concepts from various of his previous movies, this is a unique story, and a completly new way of story telling, and lynch has always had re-occuring symbols and ideas. Also, this is one of the most visualy amazing movies I have ever seen, and the things in this movie are among the scariest things I have ever seen in my entire life. What Lynch does in this film visually, I someday would like to create musically.

I heard this was the film Lynch always wanted to make but studio's always wanted more of a package. He tells two sides tales splendidly.
