It was three hours long. It was trippy and confusing as hell. It was freaky and strange, even for a David Lynch film; its colorful mix of characters includes an aspiring actress who confuses herself (and us) with her character, a lost woman in a hotel room, a family of humanoid rabbits who converse with one another in odd fashion, a group of prostitutes who roam the Hollywood walk of fame, a phantom who haunts numerous characters, and a strange older woman with an Eastern European accent who seems to possess clairvoyant powers. And I loved every minute of it. Overall, this film and Mulholland Dr. make for tough competitors when one tries to decide what David Lynch's best film is.

If Lynch has really committed himself to no longer making films (his return to "Twin Peaks" on television notwithstanding), then he really couldn't make a grand finale better than "Inland Empire" which really feels like the culmination of all the themes he explored over the years. It should also be noted that Dern is incredible here, always committed and believable regardless of what is happening on screen.

Here's a word of advice. The first time you watch this film, don't try to follow it, don't try to analyze it. Just let it wash over you. Then watch it again and try to make some connections. Between my wife and I, we think we've figured it out. It's not an easy film to understand, but the challenge is all part of the fun. Laura Dern plays an actress who has just gotten a part in a new film. When the truth behind the film is revealed, her life begins to spiral in and out of the realities of our world. One thing is for sure, you've never seen anything like INLAND EMPIRE.
