Good WW2 naval drama. Much more than your average war movie in that it develops the main characters, and looks at their personal lives too. Decent plot, though a bit contrived at times. Good direction - despite being a war movie not everything is in-your-face and developments aren't spoon-fed to you. Good action sequences, for the time. John Wayne shows that he is capable of playing more than one-dimensional characters. Good supporting cast.

It's overlong, serious and pretentious... and not too bad, actually. It's "Pearl Harbor" if that was a good movie.

This is a bit better and a bit more than just and old black and white war movie. Movies like this are the reason I',m working my way through all the Duke's movies.

Classic Preminger movie. One of the few films where John Wayne has to share the screen and actually "act". Pretty much the only John Wayne movie I can watch.
