After I loved The Blackcoat's Daughter by Perkins I saw this one just to find out that this movie is a lot of good ideas that doesn't really match together.

Oz Perkins being the son of Anthony Perkins, I had no doubts about his ability to put tension in films. He does this excellently with I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House. Ruth Wilson and the score are the two brightest spots. Ruth Wilson able to showcase curiosity, and pure terror in scenes were great. The score was especially unsettling, making scenes that much more dramatic to me.

Atmosphere - and nothing else. It's like having a pot of steamed air for dinner. Even that, however, is sabotaged by some mood-destroying backfires of attempted scares that end up looking silly as hell.

Oz Perkins is a great communicator. The problem here is not his direction, which is sure-handed. In actuality, the problem is the script, which is preposterously pretentious, and sure of itself when it certainly shouldn't be. It has no reason to be. It's piss poor at communicating who these people are beyond the vague idea of them. The bright, shining star in this mess (beside the wonderfully talented and promising Oz Perkins) is the charming and wonderful Ruth Wilson. She carries herself with excellent fluidity and intrigue that resembles that of an actress from another era. She isn't giving a naturalistic performance, and yet you believe her. She reminded me of Hitchcock's leading ladies: unassuming and bright, doubtful and intriguing, like Janet Leigh in "Psycho" (co-star to Mr. Perkins' late father, the great Anthony Perkins) or Tippi Hedren in "The Birds".

Perhaps as close as you will get to capturing the tone of a southern gothic horror tale onto film. Keep an eye on this director (Anthony Perkins' son).
