I Am Divine (2014)

Harris Glenn Milstead, aka Divine (1945-1988) was the ultimate outsider turned underground hero. Spitting in the face of the status quos of body image, gender identity, sexuality, and preconceived notions of beauty, Divine succeeded in becoming an internationally recognized icon, recording artist, and character actor of stage and screen. Glenn went from the often-mocked, schoolyard fat kid to underdog royalty, standing up for millions of gay men and women, drag queens and punk rockers, and countless other socially ostracized misfits and freaks. With a completely committed in-your-face style, he blurred the line between performer and personality, and revolutionized pop culture.

A veritable feast for Divine fans. Others will be fairly interested in this fairly straightforward documentary about his life, films and musical career, but will possibly not end up as converts to his particular style of entertainment. His films were certainly not to my taste, generally, even though they became more commercially refined and less vulgar as time went by. The talking heads predictably spew forth superlatives and the enduring impression is of a like able, outrageous albeit somewhat insecure wreck of a man.

With an appropriate explosion of humour and colour, this documentary traces the life of a fiercely individualistic actor, digging beneath the surface to explore both his origins and his legacy.

As entertaining as it is heartbreaking, I AM DIVINE is a documentary about the life of one Harris Glenn Milstead who became known around the world as the drag icon known as DIVINE. Told by the people who knew him best, I AM DIVINE is a ride through Glenn/DIVINE'S life through the high's and low's until his tragic death just before his "big television break" guest starring on "Married with Children". I AM DIVINE grabs hold of you by the shirt collar and never let's go, leaving you at the end- very emotional and with that feeling that you have just witnessed something very special.

More than just a one-name star of pop culture’s alternative history, Divine’s story — terrorized by bullies, embraced by the outré, where he finds a home — stands for “all the outsiders,” as Waters says (between hilarious anecdotes).

I Am Divine doesn't get under the skin of Milstead, but that may not be possible: he was layered in too many costumes, both physical and psychological, and his life became a performance.
