I kind of liked the film, it was okay. I just found a lot of flaws in it and it left me uninspired.

Wow. This documentary, told from the unique, gentle, compassionate view of someone who endured the experience alongside the brave people in front of the camera sharing their own stories, is truly something remarkable. It is one of a kind. It effectively takes you through the journey of a group of people who had such a beautiful connection and community, that was ravaged by something, someone so evil over such a long period of time. It somehow showcases the positive alongside the negative in a way that is deeply touching. Congratulations to Allen and to all those who took part.

Allen’s film is as much a self-reckoning as it is a cautionary tale for other spiritual seekers, and as such it offers invaluable insights into how cults – and especially cults of personality – function and grow. “Namaste,” for the record, is also an anagram for “Me Satan.”

There's an undeniable anthropological value to Allen's footage — imagine if one of David Koresh's most-trusted disciples had recorded every second of his time in the Heaven's Gate — but his film is far more compelling as an artifact than it is as a narrative.

Holy Hell should have dug a lot deeper and told its story with a lot more finesse. What happened? Maybe, after all these years, Allen was still too close to his subject?
