Harlan County U.S.A. (1977)

This film documents the coal miners' strike against the Brookside Mine of the Eastover Mining Company in Harlan County, Kentucky in June, 1973. Eastover's refusal to sign a contract (when the miners joined with the United Mine Workers of America) led to the strike, which lasted more than a year and included violent battles between gun-toting company thugs/scabs and the picketing miners and their supportive women-folk. Director Barbara Kopple puts the strike into perspective by giving us some background on the historical plight of the miners and some history of the UMWA. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in partnership with New York Women in Film & Television in 2004.

Considered one of the best documentaries ever made, Harlan County lives us to its reputation. The film makers reveal all the personalities involved in the tragic fight of the coal miners union with management.

Brilliant. Perhaps the best documentary ever made. Simply amazing achievement. This film is smack-dab in the middle of a bitter fight of Kentucky coal miners in the early 70s as they fight to unionize, and are subjected to the full weight of the mining industry and the union itself: they risk what little they have, their families, their future, murders, and assassination. This is a war film. This is a bloody history, an untold history of America itself: a war for power itself, literally. Absolutely brilliant.

What an outstanding movie! An incredible story, hard to believe it is true. And it was directed, and produced by women! I have wanted to see this film for a long time so I pleased that I finally saw it. It really left an impression on me. I was very impressed to see the county all rally together; the old women especially moved me. They had lived through a terrible blood bath regarding the mines in the 1930's and didn't want to see it repeat. It was also very scary, to see how quickly violence became the solution for many, men and women alike.
