Harlan County U.S.A. (1977)

This film documents the coal miners' strike against the Brookside Mine of the Eastover Mining Company in Harlan County, Kentucky in June, 1973. Eastover's refusal to sign a contract (when the miners joined with the United Mine Workers of America) led to the strike, which lasted more than a year and included violent battles between gun-toting company thugs/scabs and the picketing miners and their supportive women-folk. Director Barbara Kopple puts the strike into perspective by giving us some background on the historical plight of the miners and some history of the UMWA. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in partnership with New York Women in Film & Television in 2004.

Another one of my favorite movies. It shows the violence and passion in union organizing, and has some of the most striking scenes of any documentary i have ever watched.

I give "Harlan County" two stars because I literally fell asleep during it. I wasn't trying to be rude and I wasn't particularly bored per-say, but I fell asleep non-the-less. I loved the passion of the Harlan Countians. They were bound and determined to receive their terms and I loved the organicness of their unscripted arguments and protests. Probably my favorite part of the film, however, was the soundtrack. Every once and a while you would get a protest song or an old folk-ish song from those in Harlan County...it was mesmerizing and hauntingly beautiful. A good documentary, but very political. Make sure to pay attention. :]
