Joyous, touching, light-hearted, disjointed (in a good way), and thoroughly engrossing. What a treat to watch! My only grievance is that I wanted to stay with the characters for even longer. Sally Hawkins's performance is one of many fantastic lead performances by females in 2008. It's a shame that her performance didn't get quite the amount of attention it deserved. Indeed, I wouldn't have caught it had it not been for a recommendation from a fellow cinephile.

I like this movie because it doesn't romanticize being a free spirit. It just provides another way of looking at the world. Poppy's faulted, but I'd take her outlook on life over everyone else's any day.

I always felt that Mike Leigh was incapable of making a bad movie. Now I'm beginning to suspect that he can only make great ones. This is another fine example; a study of loneliness disguised as a comedy. Sally Hawkins play the lead, Poppy, and is one of those people who are (or at least pretend to be) constantly happy. Just as she's becoming insufferable, Leigh adds a layer of pathos that deepens her character and the overall experience of the film. As usual, Leigh's cast is superb, with Eddie Marsan standing out as the Poppy's crazy driving instructor. It's really their relationship that is the center of the film. Terrific stuff.

This has to be one of my favorite movies of all time. I suppose I'm not in the majority for saying this, but I love this girl and I find this story totally refreshing and uplifting. I have seen it many times already and I'm looking forward to seeing it again, primarily because it's a movie about not taking yourself so seriously all the time. Relax, take in the scenery, and enjoy the ride!

Some of these scores just further confirm to me of the dumbing down of America! People are so used to being fed garbage by Hollywood they can't appreciate a great film!!! I mean really some of these comments? "What's this movie about?" Huh? I really don't think it's that hard to understand. Anyway, I hope to see some Oscar nominations for this, it is highly deserving.
