Happiness (1965)

Though married to the good-natured, beautiful Thérèse, young husband and father François finds himself falling unquestioningly into an affair with an attractive postal worker. One of Agnès Varda's most provocative films, 'Le bonheur' examines, with a deceptively cheery palette and the spirited strains of Mozart, the ideas of fidelity and happiness in a modern, self-centered world.

Very beautifully shot film...very strange undertone.

The amazing use of colour makes it beautiful in every frame.Plus, the rare honesty in dealing with marital infidelity, the thought of too much happiness,a shocking ending, make this a film still to be discussed.

This is a film perfectly suited for early spring, with those days of fleeting warmth that spell nothing but a premature "Indian summer," a false spring followed by the one last attempt of winter to destroy as much as it can. Underneath the warm, sunsoaked images of 'Le Bonheur,' underneath their untempered, immature jouissance, lies the inevitable illness that accompanies uninhibited happiness. Varda shows us a manipulative spring, the suffering that waits at the other side of the Lacanian pleasure principle.

tres troublant. firm moraliste ou supremement sarcastique, ou amoral?

A rather surprising miniature from Agnes Varda on the ability to love more than one person simultaneously, all set to Mozart and backed by summer hues turned to autumn by the light-handed yet unshakable finale.
