Happiness (1965)

Though married to the good-natured, beautiful Thérèse, young husband and father François finds himself falling unquestioningly into an affair with an attractive postal worker. One of Agnès Varda's most provocative films, 'Le bonheur' examines, with a deceptively cheery palette and the spirited strains of Mozart, the ideas of fidelity and happiness in a modern, self-centered world.

A sarcastic portrayal of a man's idyllic dalliances outside of his marriage, Le Bonheur mocks the idea that a man is perfectly entitled to meet a woman, marry her, then meet another woman and move on without any consequence by portraying exactly this scenario in bright pastels and over-the-top sweetness to the point that it becomes subversive. Varda's eye for color is impeccable, and the subtle shifts in the color palette signal the criticism she's attempting to convey in a way that feels fresh and original, something that more traditional forms of verbal communication wouldn't. This isn't a groundbreaking or vital piece of filmmaking, but as a feminist indictment of the notion that men are owed happiness at the expense of the women in their lives, it's certainly a refreshing one.

A brilliant film. Varda has the ability to mask turmoil with a Technicolor landscape. The most ethereal aspect of the film was the score. Mozart's symphony brought about an elegant dance of beauty and tragedy. You expect there to be certain conventions upheld (namely that the disclosure of an affair to one's spouse would end a marriage), but like the title implies, there is a certain level of happiness. We may not completely relate to a husband having an affair, but we can relate to the individual pursuit of happiness.

Visually beautiful and intellectually provocative, but too cold for my taste.

Well-directed and brief (always appreciated in a non-drama). Groundbreaking director Agnes Varda usually presents a slow, steady storyline, and that is the case here. The multi-talented Miss Boyer is a beauty.
