Gorgo (1961)

When an underwater volcanic eruption tears up the sea bed off the coast of Ireland, two treasure hunters make the discovery of a lifetime when they encounter a gigantic prehistoric monster that's been unleashed from the earth's crust. After capturing the beast, the pair transport the creature down to London where it's given the name of "Gorgo" and put on display to an avid public. Little do they realize that Gorgo is just an infant, and that his exponentially larger mother is about to emerge from the depths to avenge the capture of her offspring.

The finest non-Godzilla movie out there. Irish monster kicks British ass. And the monsters win!!! Excellent!

Now here's a surprise: one of the best Godzilla knock-offs ever, and it's from ENGLAND!

It's really a British Godzilla rip-off, there are a lot of the same elements: A giant unstopable lizard fucks up the mains cities of the world, after coming out of the sea. There's nothing really special to it, it's a typical cheesy monster movie of the time. But the special effects though, I have to say that they must've put a lot of work on it and they did actually quite a nice job, for the time of course. And I liked the design of the creature, it's a little creepy. But once thing, the second half and near the end can get a little long, as you're just anticipating for the big end and the monster is doing nothing else then just rampaging the city. But anyways, recommended !!

The British answer to Godzilla is more believable than the whole slew of Godzilla versus sequels and the Gamera the spinning turtle movies. Aside from the obvious man-in-a-suit gag, the special effects were pretty good for its time.

British take on Godzilla, which has interesting concepts and characters and some very nice sets and destruction. The story is alright but a few scenes were a miss for me. I was a bit surprised to see it was on MST3K, as I never thought the movie was that bad.
