Sokurov has great ability to get us interested in what's happening in spite of his unconventional narrative. [Full review in Spanish]

Blending archival footage, actor re-creation and special effects (sometimes all in the same shot), [Sokurov] creates a sense of specific place and time — and, in doing so, crafts a sort of cinematic ode to art.

The director Alexander Sokurov is a visual virtuoso. So it’s odd, not to mention a bit disappointing, to find that the Russian filmmaker’s latest project, Francofonia, is so talky and, with rare exceptions, visually dull.

Boring, disconnected, meandering, pointless. It was 15 minutes of story stretched into an acid-induced collage. The characters for Napoleon and Liberty looked like they bought costumes at The Party Store. The modern day ship at sea in a storm plotline (term applied weakly) was silly and had no resolution. SKIP THIS MOVIE!

Francofonia (2015) bristles at labeling. The latest whatsit by Russian titan Alexander Sokurov moves comfortably between categories. It stands three paces to the right of the essay film and three paces to the left of the docudrama.
