Formosa Betrayed (2010)

In the early 1980s, an FBI Agent is assigned to investigate the murder of a respected professor. Through his investigation, he unearths a spider web of international secrets that has been thriving within college campuses across America for decades. His investigation takes him across the Pacific to the island nation of Taiwan, where with the help of the outspoken widow and an unlikely spy, he learns that the Professor's killing was not a random act, but a desperate move by a scandalous government intent on keeping its nefarious activities under wraps. Our detective soon finds himself on a collision course against the U.S. State Department, the Chinese Mafia, and the Nationalist Chinese Government - in a land where the truth is not what it seems and the only people he can trust, cannot be trusted at all. Formosa Betrayed, a ho-hum college history lecture about modern Taiwan awkwardly disguised as a political thriller, has its heart almost in the right place.

The history lesson was fine for what it was and had they played the movie in a linear fashion instead of flashbacks (excluding the history lessons) while Kelly is telling his story to Kane then straight to a linear progression just a little too much, the action was sub par and the political intrigue was typical they could have made it more suspenseful with the political portion but really didn't try, we know who kills the professor from almost the start.

While it is captivating stylistically, and the primer on the China/Taiwan relationship is great fodder for political geeks, even in its deepest moments of intrigue and pathos this is a cable TV movie at best.

Best thriller i have seen this year. It is based on true story. Initially I thought it would be a political movie and will not have as much fun. I was also afraid that this movie will not reach the Hollywood level since it was produced by a new company and a young producer. But I was wrong. This movie not only has the Hollywood standard but it is above average in all aspects. I really recommend this movie to all of you.
