Formosa Betrayed (2010)

In the early 1980s, an FBI Agent is assigned to investigate the murder of a respected professor. Through his investigation, he unearths a spider web of international secrets that has been thriving within college campuses across America for decades. His investigation takes him across the Pacific to the island nation of Taiwan, where with the help of the outspoken widow and an unlikely spy, he learns that the Professor's killing was not a random act, but a desperate move by a scandalous government intent on keeping its nefarious activities under wraps. Our detective soon finds himself on a collision course against the U.S. State Department, the Chinese Mafia, and the Nationalist Chinese Government - in a land where the truth is not what it seems and the only people he can trust, cannot be trusted at all. Inspired by actual events.

A decent political thriller set in Taiwan with the requisite Western-market-friendly lead and a determinedly pro-independence message embedded in a formulaic but diverting tale of intrigue and oppression.

History lesson? Checked. Political thriller? Checked. It has potential, but unfortunately it does not go beyond a cable TV movie at best.

A bit of a mixed bag in that it has the makings for a smart political thriller, but manages only to be an interesting history lesson, and never particularly thrilling. The acting is okay overall, especially in the face of some obvious script decencies. The set pieces and world building were impressive, the Taiwan in this film feels real and gritty, something many films set abroad lack. The geopolitical backdrop is much more interesting than the actual plot line itself, but all in all a serviceable mystery/thriller.

"China needs Taiwan. Taiwan does not need China." An IMPORTANT movie about Taiwan's recent history and struggle for Democracy and independence. Taiwanese viewers will have to forgive the fact that some of the major roles were filled by non-Taiwanese actors and some parts of the film were actually filmed in Thailand, but the average Western viewer may not even notice. The good thing is that this type of movie is actually being made. It's based on real events and accurately depicts the dynamic between the Taiwanese people and their foreign Chinese oppressors who, under Chiang Kai-Shek, took control of the island nation after WWII and declared it to be the Republic of China. Martial law was enacted, the Taiwanese language was outlawed, and people who spoke out in protest were murdered, including an American citizen on American soil. This is something that American people should know and care about.

It's been a while since I've been so captivated by a movie. I loved the ambience, even though it wasn't shot in Taiwan (too controversial so it had to be Tahiland) and the actors. Most Taiwanese actors politely declined the roles not to put their careers in Mainland in a difficult position. This film is much likely to spark a debate and reflection on Taiwan and its history, its future... The low IMDB rating came as a surprise as the film is quite pleasant: acting, sets, light and photography.
